A Little Bit of Everything on Books 📖

Why this Blog?
Literature, in any form, teaches us more about ourselves. We see the world around us a little more clearly, and words are beautiful; they comfort and challenge us.
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”
- Charles William Eliot

Why the Name Change?

Initially, this blog was called "Hannah Talks Books," which is a fine name if your blog is purely about books and nothing else. As I began to reflect on the books I read and think about my own desire to be an editor or publisher, I always turned inward somewhere in the process of thinking of the book's success. Why did it touch me? and Why didn't I like it?

These questions stayed with me through my reading of Lord of the Rings, the first time I have ever read them. I finally finished today (May 8, 2020), and it seems so long in coming. It was a story I knew much of but one that I didn't understand deeply at the core of myself. In essence, the narrative hadn't affected me in the way it seemed to affect my husband; when he cried upon reading the tale of Arwen and Aragorn aloud, I knew that I had to read the books in order to understand him better and to know that level of emotion. Well, I have found it. More on this in a blog post.

So, after reading LotR, a title change seemed in order, mostly because this blog is my thoughts on books in my life at the time I'm reading them, so I needed a name with meaning and purpose.

Leaves of Lorien
The title of this blog is about books and literature just as much as anything else. Their words are the leaves of Lorien, gold in the time you read them and also in memory, touching the next book you read and the thirty seventh one after that. Lorien’s leaves eventually fall, but not without the hope that they will return in Spring, green and growing ever golden as they mature. We forget about books that we read growing up, or even those we read last month. But, while we have them, we are in a world of light and gold, of friendship and timeless joy. We hold on to those moments of discovery and underline them in pen as we try to live as in memory of Lorien.

    About Me

    1. I love teaching and talking about Beowulf
    2. I'm aiming to start a career in editing and publishing (and working at some level with middle grade fiction) after our son is born. Here's hoping I can find a place in the book world.
    3. Sometimes I write poetry and take photographs of plants (no, seriously, more than half of my pictures have no people in them).
    4. D&D changed the way I relate to my husband and friends (for the better, mind you) and has shaped the way I think about stories.
    5. While we're on the topic of stories, my favorite TED talk and speech in existence is Chimamanda Adichie's "The Danger of a Single Story."
